This village on the eastern coast of Elba was originally the marine hamlet of Rio nell'Elba, older and dominant. From here it was exported iron ore, mined in open pit mines in the area. There is still full evidence of the mining processes just outside the village: huge buildings and warehouses, old rusted equipment for transporting ore from the mines directly on the ships, all lay now abandoned, to remind of a completely different reality from what the tourist finds today.

For over 3000 years history of Elba has been linked to the extraction of iron. Today the area of RIO MARINA and Rio nell'Elba is part of the Mineral Park, and from a historical-cultural point of view is definitely a destination not to miss.

The excursions in the old mining area are a must: stunning compositions of colors and shapes make it an unforgettable experience.

The beaches nearby – Topinetti, Cala Seregola, Fornacelle - are marked by mining: their sediments are a mix of black, for the presence of hematite, and of red, due to the presence of other oxides of iron. The coast of Rio Marina as a whole is really fascinating and special, for the incredible multitude of colors of the rocks and of the sea waters in which they dive.

The lively hamlet of CAVO, at the northeastern end of the Island, directly connected by ferries to the mainland, offers two huge gravel beaches, a well equipped Marina, a number of shops and restaurants and a gas station.
