“Caput Liberum” (free height) was the Roman name of this beautiful village, built right on top of a hill, free on all sides, with a magnificent view of all parts of the island, the sea and some islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Until a few decades ago a miners’ town, CAPOLIVERI  has now become an attraction not-to-be-missed for tourists, with its cobbled lively streets, scattered with shops, bars and restaurants, and its gorgeous panoramic piazza, where in summer jazz, classical music and various shows are staged.

The surrounding area is still renown for its viticulture and agriculture, since it covers one of the largest plains of Elba. The green promontory of Mount Calamita, which offers some of the most beautiful sceneries of the island, is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers, with trails, beaches and coves of wild beauty.

Those who come to Capoliveri can choose from a wide variety of beaches along its lengthy coastline: from the great beaches of golden sand of Lacona, Margidore and Lido, to the coves set along the eastern coast of the Golfo Stella, to the wild and colorful beaches of the mining sector of Mt. Calamita and Ginepro, up to Straccoligno and Naregno, all made of sand or gravel.
